I am delighted to recommend Ian Burgess-Simpson and his company based on my extensive experience of his work. Ian has tuned and serviced my piano in Cape Town for nearly 20 years. He is a perfectionist and a man of utmost integrity. His complete knowledge of pianos is unlike anyone I have met, either in South Africa or in Europe.
I have been impressed with the work he has done on the many South African pianos that I have performed concerts on over the years. He has rebuilt many concert instruments in South Africa, such as the Cape Town Concert Series Steinway, the Steinway in Northwards House, Johannesburg and the Yamaha for the Fish Hoek Friends of Music Society. Having played these three pianos ‘before’ and ‘after’,I can confidently confirm his utmost excellence in this field too. Indeed his advice and quality workmanshiphave contributed immensely to raising of the standards of pianos in concert halls and music societies throughout the country over the past decade. This is a considerable achievement for which we pianists are extremely grateful!
He and his company have always provided honest service to my family too. In 2011 my Aunt had appraisals of her Schimmel grand piano by various piano firms in the Western Cape and Ian Burgess Simpson pianos were by far the most thorough and fair. She eventually sold the piano through them and was delighted with their service and the price that she received.
I purchased a new Kawai grand piano from Ian in 2007 and had it shipped to the UK where I now live. This process was quite complicated, but I was delighted with the support and service that Ian and his team provided to me. I am thrilled with the instrument, which was specially set up and voiced by Ian as well as with the Kawai piano brand. As a result, I have been instrumental in buying several Kawai grand and upright pianos for King’s College School in Wimbledon and have recommended them to my students.
In summary, I cannot recommend Ian Burgess-Simpson and his company highly enough. The music community of Cape Town and the rest of South Africa are lucky to have such a dedicated and experienced piano technician and entrepreneur in their midst. I wish that he lived here in London!
